Assessments of the status and condition of Salmon populations

A key component of "Systematic Conservation Planning" is acquiring data about the conservation features of interest. One requirement for comprehensive assessments is to acquire data across the entire planning region. For salmon, this provides numerous challenges. In working across regional and rim-wide scales, we have addressed this challenge in different ways.

At the regional scale, we developed a 4-year process of engaging experts to score populations. At the Pacific Rim scale, we compiled data from multiple sources and agencies. In areas where data were not available, several different methods of estimation were employed. The case studies will illustrate the process, data, and results.

A critical point is that these database tools are either necessary components to using other tools in later stages in systematic conservation planning or complimentary to other tools and planning scales. We illustrate the development of these databases at the North Pacific and regional scales.
