Oregon Coastal Salmon Issues Make Media Headlines

December 3, 2008 -- Wild Salmon Center's work to conserve Oregon's north coast salmon rivers was highlighted on the front page of the Oregonian. WSC staff led a tour of coastal rivers and watersheds in the Tillamook State Forest, and discussed the latest data on how unsustainable logging can harm salmon habitat. Read the full news story.

Advancing Sustainable Fisheries

Key Stakeholders meet in Portland, Oregon.

November 12-13, 2008 -- The Wild Salmon Center organized and hosted the second annual Sustainable Fisheries coordination meeting with NGO and private sector partners. The participants addressed current sustainable fishery projects across the Russian Far East, and worked to develop common strategies to support them. Read full article.

Sockeye Salmon added to IUCN Global Red List of Threatened Species

Scientists find that one-quarter of world's sockeye salmon are at risk of extinction.

October 6, 2008 -- Wild Salmon Center's State of the Salmon program has led an international scientific assessment of sockeye salmon, resulting in sockeye being placed on the IUCN Global Red List of Threatened Species. The assessment found that approximately one-quarter of the world's population of Pacific sockeye salmon are at risk of extinction. Read Press Release.

Federal Legislation Protects "Salmon Strongholds"

West coast senators introduce bill to protect healthiest Pacific salmon rivers.

September 25, 2008, Washington, D.C -- U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) introduced federal legislation to support protection and restoration of the healthiest remaining wild Pacific salmon ecosystems in North America--known as "Salmon Strongholds." The bipartisan bill will complement efforts to recover threatened and endangered salmon populations by directing additional resources toward voluntary, incentive-based conservation efforts in stronghold basins across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Alaska.
