About Us

The mission of the Wild Salmon Center is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim.

We devise and implement practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity.

The Wild Salmon Center is a $6M multi-national organization with a staff of 34. The Organization has operations in the Russian Far East, Kamchatka, the Olympic Peninsula, and on the Oregon North Coast, and on the John Day and Umpqua Rivers. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center with satellite offices in Port Angeles, WA; and in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia.

Internships/Volunteer Opportunities

The Wild Salmon Center welcomes proposals for internships or volunteers. In the past, we have benefited from interns with a variety of backgrounds: GIS, Russian language skills, legal training, conservation biology, and archiving (text and image) experience. Most interns have been based at our Portland headquarters office, although there may be options for supporting our Seattle and Moscow offices as well. Please contact us to inform us of your interest, background, and specific projects or topic areas to which you could contribute.

Benefits

The Wild Salmon Center is willing to work with students and faculty to arrange college credit opportunities. We offer public transit passes, an exciting and varied working environment, periodic lectures and events, and a superb introduction to work in an international conservation organization. We regret that we cannot offer paying internships, but encourage potential interns to seek support from their universities or foundations.

Grant Writing Intern (volunteer position)

Reports to: Director of Grant Programs

Position Summary

The Intern for Grant Programs will work with an experienced grant writing professional on a variety of projects assigned according to the individual's skill in the grants process. Possible areas of work include grant proposal research and development and foundation prospect research. The intern will research funding opportunities, develop proposal concepts, and enter information about funders in our Raiser's Edge database.

The person in this position is expected to demonstrate excellent attention to detail along with good writing and analytical skills. A successful intern will develop skills in grant proposal writing, learn to use the Raiser's Edge database, become acquainted with foundations that support environmental issues, gain competency in tools used for prospect research, learn about foundation cultivation and solicitation, and become familiar with nonprofit communications activities. This position could provide an intern with skills, experience and connections useful in future employment opportunities.

Education

A Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program is required.

Position Responsibilities May Include

  • Identify and research prospective funders using the Foundation Center Online database and other search tools.
  • With the guidance of the Director of Grant Programs, develop proposal concepts and conduct research in order to develop compelling proposals.
  • Enter and maintain foundation records in the Raiser's Edge database, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the information entered.
  • Depending on skills and interest, develop custom database reports using Crystal Reports to develop proposal submission schedules, and facilitate communication with program staff about funding prospects.
  • Maintain development hard copy and electronic filing systems.
  • Perform other duties as agreed.

Position Requirements

  • High level of attention to detail and excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Interest in honing skills related to non-profit development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook and a high degree of comfort learning new software applications.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Wild Salmon Center and an understanding of environmental issues.

Compensation

This is a volunteer position envisioned for 10-20 hours per week for 3-6 months. The terms of the internship will be negotiated based on the successful applicant's goals and availability.

Development Intern (volunteer position)

Reports to: Development Associate

Position Summary

The Development Intern will work with a team of experienced development professionals on a variety of projects assigned according to the individual's level of interest and skill. Possible areas of work include individual donor cultivation and management, prospect research, event coordination, and non-profit communications. Interns will research donor prospects, develop proposal concepts, assist with the production of communications pieces, and enter and maintain information about prospective donors in the Wild Salmon Center's Raiser's Edge database.

The person in this position is expected to demonstrate excellent attention to detail along with good writing and analytical skills. A successful intern will learn to use the Raiser's Edge database, become acquainted with donors that support environmental issues, gain competency in tools used for prospect research, learn about donor cultivation and solicitation, and become familiar with nonprofit communications activities. This position could provide an intern with skills, experience and connections useful in future employment opportunities.

Education

  • Assisting with administrative projects including newsletters, web site management, and fundraising appeals.
  • Entering and maintaining donor records in the Raiser's Edge database, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the information entered and develop custom database reports using Crystal Reports.
  • Conducting prospect research on individual donors and assisting with the prioritization of development activities based on this information.
  • Maintaining development hard copy and electronic filing systems.
  • Perform other duties as agreed.
